Sankofa Kitchen, located at 1933 E Washington St in Petersburg, VA, is quickly becoming a beloved destination for lovers of authentic African cuisine. Patrons rave about the flavorful dishes, particularly the Egusi soup and fufu, which one reviewer described as "pillow soft" and bursting with flavor. The whole fish with vegetables also garners praise for its perfection, showcasing the chef's ability to deliver traditional dishes with modern flair.
Many diners highlight the warm, inviting atmosphere enhanced by good music, making it a great place for a casual meal or a special night out. Customers appreciate the attentive service, though some note a sometimes slow kitchen pace—an aspect often forgiven once the vibrant flavors arrive at the table. Jina Pierre's experience of trying African cuisine for the first time at Sankofa speaks volumes about the restaurant's ability to stretch culinary boundaries for newcomers.
While the exterior may be in need of a refresh, the real treasure lies within. From the well-spiced Jollof rice to the light, fluffy fufu, Sankofa Kitchen offers a delicious introduction to African dining that keeps patrons returning for more. It’s not just a meal here; it’s an experience worth savoring.

4.5 I ordered via FoodHub pickup , I originally ordered Whole Fish with vegetables and it gave me an option of fufu but the restaurant called and clarified that I couldn’t order that for the listed price so fyi clarify your orders if using FoodHub . I also ordered a side of Jollof rice . So minus the fufu ( I didn’t buy it this time ), the food was good although my Ghanaian friend’s Jollof rice is nicer . So this is a good spot , they have good space with good music for a nice dine-in experience.

The outside of the establishment is in much need of a makeover but the food was perfect. I got the whole fish with vegetables and I finished every last morsel. Note that service will likely be slow but it’s worth it.

Honestly the best Egusi & Fufu that I’ve ever had. The fufu is so light and fluffy and the Egusi has so much flavor and spicy. I got the chicken Egusi and it was juicy, flavorful, and just BOMB AF. Now, I can say there is a wait when you order at the restaurant, maybe about 20-30 mins. But it is worth it

Omg 10/10 best egusi soup I’ve ever had and this fufu is pillow soft with so much flavor! The guys there were so friendly and nice! I would absolutely go back again and again!

I had the vegetarian egusi with fufu, cabbage, and plantains, and it was absolutely delicious! The flavors were rich and authentic, and everything was cooked to perfection. The egusi was incredibly flavorful, the fufu had the perfect texture, and the plantains were perfectly sweet and caramelized. The cabbage added a great balance to the meal. I haven’t had African food in many years, and my first experience was when an elderly African woman welcomed me into her home and cooked for her family and we ate right form the bowl—it was some of the best food I’d ever tasted. I can confidently say that this meal tasted just as genuine and authentic as that experience. TaraMichelePhotography.com

The only thing I've ever order when I go there, is the Egusi soup with goat and a side of fufu. It never disappoints. Always delicious.

I’ve been missing West African cooking, so I was excited to discover Sankofa Kitchen. I had the Jollof with fish and fried plantains and it was amazing! The real deal. I highly recommend and will definitely return.
